DATABASE NAME COMPARISON STUDY

Summary of Results

Compared to the three largest online genealogical databases, Censustrail consistently produced better results, sometimes significantly so, when a search was made of seven randomly selected uncommon surnames. In the table below seven given names were found on the largest databases that were not on Censustrail, but 22 were found on Censustrail that were not on the other databases! This shows there is value in searching all four databases. However, a subscription to Censustrail costs less than 10% of the subscription price of Database #1 or Database #2 listed in the table below.

Details of Study

A comparison of the names found on Censustrail with the largest online databases produced some very interesting results. This will be an ongoing study. The conditions used to determine the names to be selected were as follows:

• Male adults residing in Bergen County, New Jersey during 1780-1820. The locality was restricted in order to make a standard comparison possible since the decennial tax lists for Bergen County have been extracted and are on the Censustrail database. At least one of the other databases has an index of Bergen County tax records.
• To limit the number of names found, the exact spelling of a random list of the following uncommon surnames (7) were selected to conduct the search. A soundex search would undoubtedly produce additional results. Also, a misreading of the original handwriting may influence finding some names.

6. Rinesmith
7. Yereance

• Three of the largest online databases were used to search for the above names. The names found on each database are listed in the table below. Additional details about the names can be found below the table. The databases are:
1. Subscription Database #1: With over three billion names they are probably the largest fee-based online genealogy database in the world.
2. Subscription Database #2: They are probably the second largest fee-based online genealogy database in the world.
3. Non-subscription Database #1: They are probably the largest open access online genealogy database. They are well known for gathering records from all over the world.

In some cases there were no page numbers and you had to search the whole book to find the person which was not done. While searching, there seemed to be no way to limit the hits to just those of New Jersey during the period of this study. Therefore, many given names had to be searched to find the few persons living in Bergen County, 1780-1820.
